CELTIC MOON CALENDAR Viking Ship "Day-Keeper" Norway 1000 AD - ancient replica:
$27

VIKING SHIP DAY-KEEPER Norwiegan 1000 AD Engraved stone tablet, quartzite-limestone composite (not plastic), 7 x 3 inches (18 x 7.5 cm), half inch thickness (15 mm), with carry pouch & description. Replica thousand year old Runic Moon Calendar originally carved from porpoise bone ivory and used by Viking navigators. The inscription is a mixture of Old Norse and Northumbrian runes. A still workable 'perpetual calendar' based on the 19 year Metonic Cycle of the moon. It does not rely on knowledge of the length of the year or the occurrence of leap years. It is simply set at the beginning of each year by marking the first full moon after the Winter Solstice. It can still be used today. The first full moon marks the date of "Disting," an important Celtic fete day which everyone could easily remember. Apart from the central calendar wheel, which groups the days of a typical month, the tablet records a double line inscription running down both sides. On the first line, 52 weeks of seven days are laid out using 52 repetitions of sixteen runes in the Runic script of Younger Futhark, plus special symbols adopted for the remaining three years, Arlaug, Tvimadur and Belgthor. On the second line, many of the days are marked with one of the symbols that relate to the 19 years of the lunar cycle. The runes for each weekday vary from year to year and the New Moon always falls on the inscribed day during that year of the cycle. (The unusual popularity of this piece over the years has resulted in it being directly copied (molded) by other slightly unscrupulous sellers. Needless to say, this is the original handmade version at the best price.) Celtic Lunar Calendar Celtic Lunar Calendar
